An underlying motif is the complicated, often messy relationship between fathers and sons (even "good ones") due to factors beyond anyone's control (i.e. zeitgeist, local religious culture, genetics, etc.) I almost can't even imagine the omnipresent toll of being the son of an LDS apostle in Utah in the mid-20th century.
